Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease is caused by a common parasite that can infect a cat or dog of any age. It develops after a mosquito transfers the infective larvae from an infected dog to another dog or cat. Within as few as 70 days, a fully developed and sexually active adult heartworm can move into the pulmonary arteries near the heart where it produces larvae that will circulate throughout the body, potentially being passed on to other animals via mosquitos. The parasite continues to grow causing significant and potentially fatal damage to the heart and lungs.

Although heartworm preventatives are not 100% effective they drastically decrease the chances of infection. Some of the reasons for its deficiencies are due to improper administration such as irregular dosing, incorrect dosage, or the pet vomiting before the preventative is fully absorbed into the bloodstream. It is because of these infrequences that we and the American Heartworm Society strongly recommend annual heartworm testing for the safety and health of your pet(s).

In order to help you keep your animal(s) happy and healthy, we offer both Trifexis and Heartgard as prevention options. To learn more about heartworm disease including the complete life cycle as well as a list of possible symptoms, please follow the link here.
